Last February, I was invited by my cousin to visit the Foothills Farmstead in Oakway and see all the “re”- construction progress that had been made. The Foothills Farmstead is part of the Oconee Park Service and is now open to the public: www.foothillsfarmstead.org/. I had a personal tour of the property by my cousin’s first grader who took me across the plowed up corn field and down to the creek. I was shown her favorite tree, “Old Oakie”. When I turned to walk back up to the house, the view was beautiful!
I thought about all the pieces of the house that had been disassembled and put back together. It is a “recycled” house for historical purposes. I thought about recreating the scene with pieces of paper from old books, rice paper and recycled materials. I considered using red clay in my paint, but used sand and acrylic paint instead. This piece was created on a wooden board. I wanted to show the winter sky and wintry trees behind the house and how they seemed to welcome the farmstead to it’s new location as a working farm.
