When I visit my mother, I like to look out over her yard and notice changes that have occurred. Every time I do, I see the Auto Zone on the other side of the house next to her. The Sonic Drive In is on the other side of Auto Zone and then further down is the Food Lion. Cars whiz by and rarely follow the speed limit.
Hubert and Louise are gone, the property is owned by another person. The grass grows high and the garden has disappeared. The feel of a small rural town has vanished. The shapes and colors of the pieces that remain are abstracted to portray a sense of the past and the present; and loneliness and isolation. Japanese paper napkins, origami paper, cake doilies (from my grandmother’s kitchen), scraps and leaf pages from old books were used as collage elements.
